Hello, neighbors! I hope your summer is going well. This morning, I hosted August’s First Friday at Sticks Coffee in downtown Superior along with Trustee Neal Shah. As First Fridays are casual in nature, and we often break into simultaneous discussions of different topics on the two sides of the table, it’s tough for me to fully recap the discussion. However, I hope it is still useful for me to give a short rundown of the topics I heard, which can help provide a pulse of the town.
Topics discussed at August’s First Friday include:
- Disc Golf: Two residents expressed concerns about the Rocky Mountain Women’s Disc Golf tournament, which began yesterday and runs through Sunday in Purple Park. Last week, a resident circulated a flyer through the neighborhood outlining the concerns, and the two residents who attended First Friday echoed those points (see below, and click to enlarge).
There was a rumor that the disc golf course in Purple Park is being considered as a permanent amenity, but after speaking with our Town Manager after the meeting, I can definitively confirm that is not the case; the disc golf baskets / etc are only there temporarily; we also do not have a long-term contract to run this tournament in the future. Looking back through my emails over the last few days, we have had more supporters than opponents of the tournament writing in to our Board. I have also already heard that parking management has been better this year than in 2017, which is great news. However, for those residents with specific concerns about the behavior of the athletes and spectators here for the tournament, please email me if there is anything we can do to make this event more comfortable for neighbors (e.g., making an announcement reminding people not to block driveways when parking), so I can pass those comments on to the tournament organizers ASAP. My understanding is that the organizers are grateful for the beautiful space and are eager to be good neighbors to us while they are here, and I’m happy to pass along any concerns so they can be addressed immediately and we can all enjoy the next few days. - Winter rental of North Pool: A representative from Elevation Athletics asked about potentially renting the North Pool from November to March, when it is currently closed. My understanding is that this may be prohibitively expensive, but I have passed this request on to the Town Manager. While I would not support the Town funding this endeavor, if Elevation is able to cover the costs and also open up a lane or two to the broader community, I think this could be a win-win situation.
- Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport: Finally, several residents attended once again to discuss safety and noise concerns about the planes coming from Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport (RMMA). Of new note – two residents stated that FAA is opening up an investigation of low-flying planes at RMMA to ensure they are flying at a safe altitude. They will not, though, be considering noise impacts; only safety.
Hope to see you at next month’s First Friday! If you have thoughts on these or other topics, I would encourage you to attend our next Meeting on Monday August 12th at Town Hall and speak up in public comment, or email the full Board at townboard@superiorcolorado.gov.

Laura,. I have a problem with people backing up to Purple Park objecting to it being used. Yes, they bought and paid a premium for their lots but it is a public park being maintained by everyone in the town and for everyones enjoyment. I think it is awesome having the frisbee golfers there and I am all for leaving the course up for use beyond the tournament.
I agree with Mike. It’s an under utilized, exclusive park for wealthy home owners. They made the park very inaccessible to “outsiders” as it is. The parking is ridiculous. Leave the course up, let everyone enjoy purple park, not just a few.
